Mudroom Summer Reset

Resetting your mudroom for the season is important to keep your mornings organized and on track. Getting out the door in the morning can be chaotic enough and there is no time to waste searching for keys, shoes, or bags. Reset for summer with these simple tips.

Winter Is Out

Like many of us, your mudroom might currently be a mix of different seasons. Let’s start by doing away with winter! Washing or cleaning coats, boots, and gear is always a great way to start so everything is fresh for the next season swap. Store items in bins by category and label them clearly to make items easy to find. If you have a storage space, like a basement or an attic, store items there until next season. If you don’t have a designated storage area, utilize the harder to reach storage spots in the mudroom. Moving winter items into the less valuable real estate will help make room for the items currently being used.

Here are some items to keep in mind for storing:

  • Heavy coats & jackets
  • Snow boots & winter boots
  • Winter hats, gloves, and scarves
  • Snow shovels & ice scrapers
  • Winter sports equipment

Summer Is In

Now that winter is stored away, there’s plenty of room for summer! Keeping the summer items in your mudroom ensures that they are easily accessible for spontaneous outdoor activities and trips. Before bringing summer into the space, give a quick wipe down or wash any items that need it. Now is a great time to clean your storage shelves and cubbies before restocking them.

Items to bring in for summer:

  • Flip flops, sandals, water shoes, and sneakers.
  • Lightweight jackets & raincoats
  • Summer hats & sunglasses
  • Swimwear (swimsuits, goggles, swim caps, and life jackets)
  • Sunscreen & bug spray
  • Bike helmets & pads
  • Summer sporting equipment (gloves, balls, bats, and rackets)
  • Frisbees, kites, and outdoor games

Year Round Tips

Make sure to clean and de-clutter the mudroom regularly. It’s easy for this space to become a drop zone when you enter the house, so regular maintenance is key. Keeping only currently used items in the this space will ensure it stays tidy and functional. Take advantage of all storage solutions like hooks, shelves, cubbies, shoe racks, and benches. Add a laundry basket for dirty clothes and sports uniforms if space permits. A bulletin board or chalkboard for notes, reminders and schedules is a great addition too.
