Lovely Linens

Nothing is better than crisp sheets and fluffy towels. So what’s in your linen closet? And by closet, maybe it is something smaller like a basket or an under-bed bin. Think about how you store the towels, sheets, blankets, and other bedding extras in your home.

Volume Control

How often do you do linen laundry? How many towels do you realistically use? Do you constantly have guests or family staying with you? The answer to these questions will tell you how much you need to have on-hand. In general, two sets of sheets are reasonable for everyday use – one for on the bed, one in the wash. Same goes for towel sets, although some people cycle through their linens more frequently. And unless you have long-term guests on the regular, you only need one set of sheets and towels per sleeping spot.

Where to Store

Think about what space you have and what your habits are already. In some homes, it makes the most sense to keep all the linens in a central spot – quick grab from the hall closet. If this is the case for you, arrange the items either by sub-type (queen sheets, hand towels, wash cloths…) or by who uses it (kids sheets, main bathroom towels…). In other houses, it is more efficient to put sheets in the rooms they belong to or towels in a bathroom cabinet where they are used. Consider how you work in your house and plan accordingly.

Containing Technique

You have what you need and a spot to put it, so let’s talk about how to keep things neat. As my proper grandmother taught me, there is the traditional way to fold the ever-complicated fitted sheet. Towels can be folded in all different ways, but your goal is to make use of the shelf or bin space efficiently. Make sure to think about the size folded towels need to be in order to fit well in their spots. Pile them neatly on a shelf or in the bin. Even if you have shelves, sometimes baskets with labels help to corral the smaller linens like washcloths. You can also use shelf dividers to steady those stacks.

Now that you have a game plan, get folding!
