Organizing Baking Supplies

Baking comes with a lot of specific supplies and gadgets which can overwhelm your kitchen. Of course you have some basics, but if you enjoy baking and cake decorating, the gadgets and bits add up quickly.

Gather & Edit

Go on a hunt and gather all your baking supplies together. Start with the large items – like cake pans and brownie dishes – then move on to small appliances and tools. If you like to decorate cakes, you’ll also have a bunch of icing-related bits and bobs, too. Take a first pass and ditch anything that’s broken, crusty or just past its prime. Decide what you actually use and set aside the remainder as a donation.

Divide & Assign

Once you know what you will use – really and truly! – consider your storage location options. This may be in the kitchen cabinets, the pantry or another storage area that supports the kitchen. Once you have a sense of the spaces you may use, begin to divide up the baking items into categories. Groups can be created by type of use (small tool, pan…), baking category (pies, cakes…), and/or frequency of use. Think about how you work and what the best system to support that process will be. You’ll also likely have items that crossover to daily cooking vs just baking, so make note of those.

Next you’ll decide on a location or locations. If all your supplies fit in one area, that’s great. But if they don’t you’ll want to use those categories you just made to divide your collection into different spaces. Make sure to give your most frequently used items the best real estate, the easiest place to reach. Lesser used items can go on higher shelves or further from your work area.

Product Help

  • Pans and cooling racks are best stored vertically using dividers in the cabinet above an oven or in a deep lower cabinet. If you have a drawer beneath the oven, then storing cookie sheets and small pans flat is another option, although it requires removing whatever is stacked on top to reach everything.
  • Command cord bundler for tethering those mixer and small appliance cords.
  • Divided Bins are perfect for things like food coloring, cookie cutter, icing bags and tips and small decorating tools.
  • A lidded bin with inserts is helpful if you have to store cake decorating items further from your workspace and it can be stacked easily. You can grab it and bring it to the counter when you need it.
